TANZANIA has at least 53.9 million pounds of uranium oxide deposits and expects to start mining some of that by 2011, Energy and Minerals Minister William Ngeleja has said.
Although gold continues to dominate the country’s mining sector, there has been increasing interest in other metals like uranium and nickel. Minister Ngeleja said two companies - Mantra Tanzania Limited, a unit of Australia’s Mantra Resources, and Uranex Tanzania Limited, a subsidiary of Australia’s Uranex - hope to start producing in two years. MBABANE – Police made a drug bust at the Matsapha International Airport when they caught a man who had swallowed 42 cocaine sachets.
On Friday morning, police at the airport pounced on the unsuspecting passenger who it is said was from Brazil. A source close to the matter said that the police suspected the man, and asked to conduct a search on him. Police Public Relations Officer Superintedent Vusi Masuku confirmed that a 30-year-old Tanzanian male was arrested and charged with Pharmacy Act.

EXPATRIATE managers of the gemstone mining company TanzaniteOne Ltd, working in Manyara Region, have been accused of racism and subjecting local workers to undue harassment and demeaning work conditions.
In a scathing attack on the South African-based firm which is currently the primary miner of tanzanite in the country, Simanjiro legislator Christopher Ole Sendeka declared in parliament that local workers at the Mererani mining plant are the victims of harsh treatment and discrimination by their foreign bosses. A bus in Tanzania collided with a lorry after bursting a tyre, killing 28 people, police said on Monday. Simon Sirro, regional police commander for Tanga, said the accident occurred on Sunday in Korogwe, about 200 km northwest of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam. Among the 18 men and 10 women killed were an American woman and a Kenyan man, he said.
Fatal road accidents are rife in east Africa, where roads and vehicles are poorly maintained and speeding is common. Last week, 22 people died in Kenya when two buses collided.

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) is conducting civic education to raise awareness on the circulation of fake notes.
A senior official with the central bank, Mr Abdul Dollar, said yesterday the exercise at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair would raise the public�s awareness on key security features on genuine notes.
The circulation of fake notes escalated in the early 1990�s after the introduction of the Sh5,000 and Sh10,000 notes.

OPPOSITION lawmakers have yet again refused to be silenced from openly debating in Parliament on dubious payments amounting to more than 155bn/- made by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) to Meremeta Gold Limited company.
The Shadow Minister for Defence and National Service, Masoud Abdalla Salim, asserted in the National Assembly here yesterday that the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) as an institution is being used to hide possible corruption involved in the Meremeta deal.
