Concern over EAC’s poor transport systems

The roads, railways and maritime transportation systems in the EAC region are, on average, in a poor state as are the railways and inland waterways transport systems.

East African Community Secretary General Juma Mwapachu lamented that even though efforts which seek to address these megacity transport woes were underway, such as the Dar Rapid Transport System and the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Strategy, escalating costs and intensifying unplanned urbanisation could limit the effectiveness of these transport programmes. Rwanda: Gasigwa Wins Tanzania Tennis Tourney

Rwanda’s top seed Jean Claude Gasigwa won singles and doubles finals in the Tanga Cement International Tennis tournament played yesterday at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, Tanzania.

In the singles final, Gasigwa ousted Tanzanian Jacob Jonas in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 to pocket $ 1000 (Rwf0.57m) prize money. Read the rest of this entry »

Varsity students to pay fees in phases

Tumaini University’s Dar es Salaam College (Turdaco), has said none among its students will be suspended as a result of failure to pay the new fees.

This was said by the Provost of the Tumaini University Dar es Salaam campus, Prof Geoffrey Mmari, when addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

He said the university had already set ways through which students who would not afford to pay the new fees in one batch, to pay the balance in instalments. He said even if a student delays to settle the fees, he would be allowed to continue with studies upon completion of the fees. Read the rest of this entry »

But while the late Nyerere’s dress sense reflected the humility of the working class, Kikwete is clearly a symbol of the capitalism that Tanzania now embraces; a scion of the elegance that has become the trademark of the emerging generation of African presidents.

Zanzibar: Voter Registration Suspended

CUF claims that Zanzibar’s legal framework is preventing the elaboration of an appropriate voter list as the threat of unrest grows. The voter registration exercise in Zanzibar has been suspended amid fears of unrest as many people were denied registration because of lack identity card. There has been political tension since the registration of voters began on the island of Pemba in July 2009.

Authorities to test baby formula

Health authorities are to carry out food safety tests on a popular baby formula, S26, after the product was banned in Tanzania this week. The Tanzanian Food and Drug Authority banned the product — manufactured in Sandton, Johannesburg, by Aspen Pharmacare — after receiving complaints that it was making babies ill. Uganda worries Tanzania ahead of U-17 CECAFA semis

TANZANIA coach Rodrigo Stockler has tipped Uganda to go past his side in the semi-final of the CECAFA U-17 championship in Khartoum today.  But his Ugandan counterpart Richard Wasswa believes the Brazilian is playing mind games.

After ejecting Ethiopia, Stockler watched Uganda damp Malawi 2-0 in a lopsided quarterfinal late Wednesday night (2am). Stockler concluded: “Uganda is strong. They play very good football. But I’m satisfied with our performance even when we lose. I did not expect it.

Tanzania’s NMB sees up to 30 pct asset growth in 09

Tanzania’s National Microfinance Bank (NMB) sees its assets growing by up to 30 percent in 2009 from 1.4 trillion shillings last year, its chief executive said on Friday. The bank expects pretax profits similar to last year’s 70.9 billion shillings despite the global economic slowdown, which has forced Tanzania to cut its 2009 growth forecast to 5 percent from 7.4 percent a year before. Tanzania prepares for looming threat of El Nino: report

 The Tanzanian government was taking all precautions against a looming threat of El Nino rains, expected in the country in October, the local newspaper Daily News reported on Friday.  Tanzanian Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Coordination and Parliamentary Affairs) Philip Marmo made the remarks here on Thursday, noting that the government was leaving nothing to chance and decided to take measures before it is too late.
