Access to financial services ‘minimal’

Access to financial services in the country is hampered by poor education and low levels of literacy, experts have said.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, the experts from the Financial Sector Deepening Trust(FSTD) said past Finscope surveys, especially the one conducted in 2006 and this year’s survey,
had shown that the problem was one of the biggest factors affecting

Gulamali loses his squash title

Chikumbutso Mkutumula of Malawi edged out Tanzanian Ahmed Gulamali by a point to win the Bell Squash title at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club over the weekend.

Dar picks committee for World Cup trophy

The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, William Lukuvi has formed a committee, which will supervise the World Cup Trophy tour.

The genuine 6.2 kilogramme golden trophy started its African tour in Egypt last week and would arrive on November 14.

91pc of Tanzanian tea snapped up at auction

Tanzania offered 103,326 kilos of tea for sale at the Mombasa auction last week, and 91.35 per cent of it was bought.

It offered 137,767.5 kilos of tea, of which 127,814 kilos were purchased during a similar period last year, the Africa Tea Brokers Limited noted. Read the rest of this entry »

Arusha to host Commonwealth open forum Friday

The British High Commission and the British Council have organised an open forum to allow the public discuss the relevance of the Commonwealth in the modern world. The forum will be held in Arusha on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam, the political
and press officer at the British High Commission, Mr John Bradshaw, said
the forum would also discuss the way to improve aid and trade among Commonwealth member states.

Govt addressing obstacles in information sector, says minister

Tanzania has began taking measures to remove hitches hindering the growth of the informal sector and its effective contribution to the national economy.

This was said in Dar es Salaam on Monday by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Development deputy permanent secretary, Ms Edine Mangesho, when opening a five-day workshop on informal sector employment. Read the rest of this entry »

Envoy against gender priority over capability

Women need to be competent and stop using gender balance as a weapon for recruitment into decision making organs to bring equality and
development in Africa, the Namibia high commissioner to Tanzania, Mr Japheth Isaack, has said.

CUF prepares to demonstrate in Dar today

The opposition Civic United Front (CUF) will today hold a peaceful demonstration to the office of the Registrar of Political Parties, Mr John Tendwa, to demand an independent National Electoral Commission.

At the registrar’s offices, CUF leaders would air their concerns over the
manner the current Commission has been ‘mishandling’ elections in the
country.
