Clubs set national swimming tournament

Twelve teams tomorrow line up for the national swimming title chase at Heaven of Peace Academy(Hopac) about 25km north of Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) secretary general Noel Kiunsi, said financial constraints forced the organisers to stage the event tomorrow not today as it was earlier announced.
Kiunsi said that TSA failed to raise the budgeted Sh10 million to stage the competition which would feature both men and women teams, respectively. Read the rest of this entry »

Professional golfers axed from Morogoro Open

Professional golfers have been excluded in the Cargo Stars Morogoro Open Golf tournament which tees off here yesterday.
The announcement to sideline the professionals came late Thursday at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, according to the national golf team coach Stanley Sanga.

However, Sanga did not explain the move, saying it was a last minute decision from the organisers and sponsors of the 36-hole tournament.

Barclays sponsorship Sought to boost soccer

The Government has asked The English Premier League sponsor, Barclays Bank, to make a joint sponsorship with Vodacom to spice up the local league.

The call was made  by the National Sports Council chairman, Idd Kipingu, when receiving the English Premier League trophy at New Africa Hotel, Dar es Salaam.

Parliament to set up team to probe Loliondo evictions

The Parliament yielded to pressure by Member of Parliament Christopher Ole Sendeka (Simanjiro-CCM) to form a committee to investigate the truth about Loliondo evictions.

Announcing the Decision in Parliament yesterday evening, the Speaker of the House Samuel Sitta said the special committee will be comprised of Parliamentary Committee on Land and government officials. Read the rest of this entry »

CUF to explain Karume-Hamad talks

The Civic United Front is today holding a major rally in Zanzibar where Secretary General Seif Shariff Hamad is expected to shed more light into his meeting, on Thursday, with President Amani Abeid Karume.

The opposition party has organised for the rally at Kibanda-Maiti, hot in the heels of the state house meeting with President Karume that signaled a major political turn around for the two rival politicians who had not been Seeing Eye to Eye.

The Richmond nightmare

The acrimony around the Richmond power scandal will linger on to next year after Parliament abruptly adjourned yesterday without concluding debate on the saga that has divided Chama Cha Mapinduzi down the middle.

Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda moved a motion to adjourn the 17th session of Parliament last evening until January 2010, postponing what had been anticipated debate on several sensitive public issues, including a government report on implementation of recommendations by the MPs on the $172 million emergency power contract.

Dar under fire over regional meeting

Participants at a regional agricultural meeting in Dar es Salaam have criticised Tanzania’s poor representation, saying it did not reflect the seriousness the Government has attached to its newly unveiled ‘Kilimo Kwanza’ strategy to boost agricultural production.

Cabinet ministers and senior government officials skipped the two-day Third African Grain Trade Summit, prompting some participants to question the Government’s commitment to improving agriculture.

Red Cross equally constrained by resources

The Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) has prepared a Sh3 billion budget estimate for effectively handling the early effects of El Nino rains should they start pounding the country.
