Assist poor women, says UN official

The executive director of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Prof Anna Tibaijuka, has challenged economically advantaged women in the country to play a leading role in emancipating those who are less fortunate from economic and social hardships.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam at the weekend, she said the best way of doing that would be for the better off ladies forming groups to help in empowering their disadvantaged counterparts.

State mum over TRL end of contract notice

No stand was given by the Government  on the notice served by the Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL) management that wants the contract with RITES of India terminated.

The 60-day notice, in which the TRL management seeks to end the partnership, expired on monday.

Deficit in national power grid eases slightly

Efforts by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and other stakeholders have managed to reduce the power deficit in the national grid to 95MW.

At the height of power shortage mid last month, the deficit in the national grid had reached 150MW.

EAC, Sadc Comesa plan giant trading bloc

A free trade area encompassing the EAC, Comesa and Sadc blocs is expected to be established within two or three years.

The secretary-general of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), Mr Sindiso Ngwenya, said in Dar es Salaam that the main aim of integrating the three blocs was to promote trade and investment.

Say something, Karume advised

Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume should end his silence and shed more light on his agreement with his longtime political rival, Mr Seif Shariff Hamad, a respected commentator said.

At the same time, the US embassy commended the two leaders for putting their differences aside, and said the gesture should be followed by concrete measures to end the longstanding political stalemate in the isles.
