Number of smokers ’set to rise sharply’

With the number of smokers in Africa projected to rise sharply, nearly 90 per cent of the people on the continent are still exposed to high-risk secondary smoke.

This is according to a new report released at an ongoing regional cancer conference in Dar es Salaam.

Kikwete applauds Karume-Seif peace move

President Jakaya Kikwete has welcomed last week’s meeting between Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume and CUF secretary-general Seif Shariff Hamad.

In his first public response to the meeting, President Kikwete pledged his support for the two leaders initiative to resolve the long-running political crisis in the isles.

Sitta shoots down Rostam’s plea over Richmond report

National Assembly Speaker Samwel Sitta has rejected a proposal by Igunga MP Rostam Aziz for a panel of judges to resolve the controversy surrounding the Richmond emergency power generation contract.

Talking to telephone, the Speaker said continuing with the argument to refute Parliamentary findings on the Richmond scandal or not does not serve any useful purpose.

Body wants more experts after uranium discovery

Tanzania’s efforts to embrace nuclear technology may take much longer than anticipated because the country does not have nuclear scientists, according to the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (Taec) boss.

Mr Firmin Banzi said those currently handling nuclear applications were engineers, medical specialists and other experts who had not been purposely trained in nuclear science.

Chadema crisis deepens as slaa tells Zitto off

Chadema Secretary General Dr Wilbroad Slaa has criticised Mr Zitto Kabwe for speaking out in defence of two individuals, who lost their employment posts recently.

Dr Slaa announced the abolition of the posts held by Mr David Kafulila, who was the party’s information officer and Mr Danda Juju, who was in charge of parliamentary affairs.

Lack of equipment hinders efforts to contain prostate cancer

Lack of laboratory equipment to diagnose prostate cancer in most parts of Tanzania has been cited as a major drawback in efforts to contain the affliction among men aged 50 and above.

Rev Canon Dr Emmanuel Kandusi, the coordinator of the Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign, said lack of equipment and the habit of not undergoing regular medical checkups were the biggest impediments to the campaign to check prostate cancer. Read the rest of this entry »

Mollel calls for East African Golf Tour

Professional golfer Ollais Mollel has called for the formation of East African Tour to enable the region’s golfers compete favourably on the international scene.

Speaking in Arusha, Mollel said if the East African Tour is formed, golfers from such tours in Europe and South Africa would come and compete in East Africa.

Libya lose Challenge Cup spot

Libya will not participate at the forthcoming East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup that would kick off on November 28 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The secretary general of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa), Nicholas Musonye confirmed that Libya failed to confirm their participation on time.

Court acquits varsity students leaders

The Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court  dismissed charges against the president of the University of Dar Student’s Organisation (Daruso) and four others for lack of witnesses to testify against them.

Those acquitted include Daruso president Antony Machibya and his secretary general Owawa Juma and three students, Sabinian Pius, Titus Ndula and Paul Issa. Read the rest of this entry »

Government set to distribute seized fish haul to 115 institution

About 115 private and public institutions will from tomorrow start receiving for free, portions out of 296.32 tonnes of fish impounded from a foreign fishing trawler that was allegedly found fishing illegally in Tanzania waters.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam, the minister for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Mr John Magufuli, said the chosen institutions had passed the set requirements.
