Busy days ahead for Kikwete

OPEN WIDE: The moment a crocodile was killed after getting trapped in a maze of angry hippos.

This spectacular, rare battle of the beasts was caught by wildlife photographer Vaclav Silha. The 45-year-old Czech got the shock of his life after setting up his camera on the banks of the Nile in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, to take snaps of a group of 50 hippos bathing in the river.

A colossal fight broke out between the group and a crocodile that strayed too close to a mother and her calves.

Busy days ahead for Kikwete

When president Jakaya Kikwete and the First Lady of Tanzania, Salma Kikwete, visit Jamaica on a three-day state call, they will be confronted with a busy schedule.

The visit is as a result of the Jamaican Government’s efforts to establish closer linkages with key African states.

The activities for the officials visit begin Monday. The Tanzanian leader will be looking at tourism-investment opportunities and will be visiting St Ann for meetings with parish officials and Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett. Read the rest of this entry »

Convergence Wireless moves into Tanzania

Convergence Wireless Networks has bought a 35% stake in a Tanzanian wireless connectivity provider for an undisclosed amount.

Convergence Wireless is a joint venture between Convergence Partners and Comsol Wireless Solutions. It has acquired a share of WIA Company, a Tanzanian wireless connectivity provider focused on the enterprise market segment. Read the rest of this entry »

Africa must think big to thrive

Many African states are too small to continue to exist independently, Sudan-born magnate Mo Ibrahim has told a conference in Tanzania.

Mr Ibrahim said the idea that 53 small African countries thought they could compete with China, India, Europe and the US was a “fallacy”.

Trade within Africa accounts for just 4-5% of the continent’s international trade, something that is “not viable”. Read the rest of this entry »
