Donors warned aid-reliant Tanzania on Thursday that rising corruption and weak accountability put next year’s grants to the country at risk.
For the 2009/10 (July-June) fiscal year, 11.4 percent of its budget, or $831 million, is funded directly by a pool of 14 donors. It is among Africa’s highest per capita aid recipients.
But rising concern over the government’s weak governance, economic policy and failure to keep to agreements has led donors to disburse below what they pledge for the past few years. Read the rest of this entry »

The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) and Judiciary should shoulder the blame for Tanzania’s sharp drop in the global corruption rankings, politicians and activists said yesterday.
They told The Citizen that the two key institutions were not doing enough to stamp out entrenched corruption.
Their reaction came after respected anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) released a report showing that Tanzania has dropped 24 places in this year�s Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

THE Director of Finance at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Mr Julius Angelo, told a Dar es Salaam court yesterday that Amatus Liyumba played a minor role in approving payments for construction of the twin towers of the Central Bank.
He told magistrates Edson Mkasimongwa, Lameck Mlacha and Benedict Mwingwa that major payments were effected by the BoT governor while Liyumba, who was director of personnel and administration dealt with minor payments for the project.
