Use animal dung for power-call

Concerted efforts should be made to turn waste from livestock into electric power, a government official has proposed.

In this connection the Misungwi district commissioner, Ms Mariam Lugaila, has urged the East African Energy Business Promotion and Tanzania Rural Electrification Agency to lead the way.

Officiating at a training seminar on solar energy technology for entrepreneurs from rural areas in Lake Zone regions, she said like other districts in the zone, Misungwi District had a big number of livestock for producing waste which could in turn produce enough electricity.

“The number of livestock in Misungwi District is almost equal to the population of residents of the district,”:she said.

She stressed that the use of livestock waste to produce power could assist in conserving the environment as people would stop felling trees for use as firewood. Read the rest of this entry »

CCM top organs to decide on Isles pact

TOP CCM organs will soon deliberate on an agreement reached between Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume and CUF Secretary General Seif Shariff Hamad and act accordingly, the National Assembly was told yesterday.

The Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda, commended the two leaders for their meeting and expressed his pleasure over the growing concord among politicians in

Zanzibar, after protracted tension.

“As Pinda, I personally commend the move because we all like

Zanzibar to remain in peace,” he added.

JK stresses investment in health, education

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has said here that his government will continue to improve delivery of health and educational services to achieve its goal of making life better to all Tanzanians.

Mr Kikwete said this during a meeting with former US President Bill Clinton at the

Kirchner Museum on last Wednesday, evening, where he also said infrastructure development was being given due attention.

The former US leader had wanted to know from President Kikwete how the global economic meltdown affected

Tanzania and the government’s response to its challenges.

Sh1.4bn loans offered to four microlenders

Accessing cheap finances can turn the lives of the poor around, the country manager for Oikocredit Tanzania Limited, Mr Deus Manyenye said.

With cheap credit poor families are able to generate incomes, support families and sustain their communities, he said. ?Oikocredit believes that poor people can build themselves a better life, if only given the chance, if only given credit. We believe in financing projects or businesses with social relevance.?

He was speaking yesterday in Dar es Salaam during the presentation of Sh1.4 billion loans to four microfinance institutions (MFIs): Wanama Saccos that got Sh800 million, Revival Church Saccos Sh300 million, Mapambazuko Saccos Sh150 million and Belita Sh150 million.

Since it started operating in

Tanzania in 2006 Oikocredit has lent Sh12 billion to MFIs.

Oikocredit charges the interest of 12-16 per cent annually to MFIs.

Tanzania to join BDO International.

Two soldiers in court over civilian’s killing

Two soldiers were yesterday arraigned for last weekend’s murder in the wee hours of a

Dar es Salaam clearing and forwarding agent, following an alternation sparked by a motor vehicle mishap.

The two, who are members of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), were charged in the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court with the murder of Mr Swetu Fundikira.

Sergeant Rhoda Robert and Corporal Ally Ngumbe, who appeared before Resident Magistrate Genvitus Dudu, were not allowed to enter pleas, as the lower court has no jurisdiction to hear a murder case.

The suspects were driven to the court early in the morning in a police Land Rover and taken into the cells, where they remained until they were brought before the magistrate at around 8.30am.

City residents, who had heard that the two would be charged in the morning, thronged the court premises to catch a glimpse of the suspects and follow the proceedings in the matter, which has stirred

Dar es Salaam and been the talking point in offices and homes.

Dawasco worker in court over over Sh1.5m bribe

A Dar es Salaam resident, Mr Chobines Mabega, 38, was on Monday brought before the Kinondoni District Court facing two counts, one being soliciting a bribe. Mr Mabega who resides at Ukonga Majumba Sita and an employee of the

Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation (Dawasco) as a meter reader, appeared before resident magistrate Sundi Fimbo.

According to the prosecutor from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Mr Ronald Manyiri, on January 20, this year, at Keys Hotel in Mikocheni in Kinondoni District, the suspect asked for Sh1.5 million bribe from Kinabo Humprey to allegedly connect water to his property illegally.

On the second count, on January 22, this year, at Blue Star bar, Mabega allegedly received Sh750,000, as part of a bribe he had asked.

Mr Mabega was released on bail, and the case was adjourned to February 16, this year, when it will come up again for mention.

Meanwhile, Mr Yusuph Said, 18, appeared before resident magistrate Lina Msanga, charged with rape of a minor. Read the rest of this entry »

Minister dismisses TTU strike threat

An ultimatum issued by the Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU), to stage a countrywide strike, will not disrupt CCM?s campaign for the forthcoming General Election, the government has said.

The deputy minister for Education and Vocational Training, Mrs Mwantumu Mahiza, said such threats would not cost the ruling party in the next election.

The ultimatum is intended to press the government to pay teachers their arrears claims.

Responding to a supplementary question posed by Chambani MP Salim Hemed Khamis (CUF) in the House yesterday, the deputy minister confidently assured the legislators that CCM shall will win the forthcoming General Election despite teachers? threats.

?Arrears claims for 14,215 teachers have not been paid after the government spotted fraudulent claims during the evaluation and assessment exercise on teachers claims conducted last year,? she said.

A total of 61,423 primary and secondary school teachers on Tanzania Mainland, have so far been paid their arrears claims.

The deputy minister told the MPs that the teachers? were paid after their claims proved to have legal and in accordance to rules and regulations governing public expenditure.

TWIN TOWERS CASE:Deputy governor defends Liyumba in Sh221bn trial

Bank of Tanzania (BoT) deputy governor Juma Reli said yesterday that it was difficult to state whether there was any loss in the construction of the central bank?s headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

He made the remarks when testifying before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate?s Court in the case against the former BoT director of personnel and administration, Mr Amatus Liyumba.

Mr Liyumba, who has been behind bars for almost a year now, is accused of abuse of office, which allegedly occasioned the government a Sh221 billion loss through inflated costs of the construction of the new BoT headquarters, dubbed the ?Twin Towers?.

Led by State Attorney Juma Ramadhani, Mr Reli said as far as he was concerned, no loss had been ascertained in the project as the final evaluation had yet to be carried out.

He was testifying before a panel of magistrates comprising Mr Edson Mkasimongwa, Mr Benedict Mwingwa and Mr Lameck Mlacha. Read the rest of this entry »

Mwanza is more than the city of rocks

Mwanza Airport, one can easily notice a huge board reading: “Welcome to

Rock City.” But after staying in the city for a few hours or days, you will soon realise that there is a lot more than rocks in Mwanza.

Mwanza is the country’s second largest and fast growing city after Dar es Salaam, strategically located on the southern shores of

Lake Victoria, some 1,140 metres above sea level, a factor that makes the place to have a pleasant weather throughout the year.

“Apart from fine weather, several beautiful hills surrounding Mwanza and splendid scenery of

Lake Victoria, we are proud of the people, who are hardworking and very generous,” says Mr Thomas Tukay, the City Urban Planner.
