THE prosecution today asked the Kinondoni Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam to grant them more time to conduct investigations into a case against Miss Tanzania Miriam Gerald (22), who is charged with assault and malicious damage to property.
Inspector of Police Nassoro Sisiwaya told Principal Resident Magistrate Kwey Rusema that the investigation into the case was not complete and asked for another mention date to give them time to complete the investigation.
“I’m requesting for more time to investigate this matter,” Sisiwaya asked the court. Magistrate Rusema granted the request and adjourned the case to April 21, when it will come for mention. Read the rest of this entry »

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has directed the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) to take to task anyone implicated in graft in connection with the forthcoming general elections.
The president said the Bureau should now implement the new law on Election Expenses to give more integrity to the country’s electoral process and democracy in general. “The new law is ideal at this time in fighting those who aspire to get into leadership through corrupt means,” the president said when opening the Annual Meeting of the Bureau here yesterday.
He also warned those who solicit, take or give bribe, saying that the law is not going to spare anyone involved in such practices. Read the rest of this entry »

Kalalani mining village small scale miners in Korogwe District, Tanga Region, have called on the government to streamline mining laws to enable artisanal miners access mining licenses.
The plea was made at Kalalani village during an interview with reporters from Tanga and Arusha regions who toured a women and mining project in the area.
Speaking on behalf of artisanal miners in the village, acting village government chairman, Mr Amanth Ngereka, said procedures for accessing prospecting and mining licenses were too cumbersome and mostly favoured wealthy people. Read the rest of this entry »

PRIME Minister Mizengo Pinda has said that the government is committed towards making sure that all regions are connected by trunk roads by the year 2016.
He made the commitment yesterday in separate occasions when talking to residents of Ibushi and Kigwa wards in Uyui District, Tabora Region. The premier noted that such initiative would enable the roads to be passable throughout the year.
He was responding to a question from Juma Mohamed Kalindimya, a resident of Ibushi, who wanted to know as to when the government would lay tarmac on Nzega - Tabora road.
Mr Pinda said that the government was set to finish the first phase of constructing trunk roads by 2012 and second phase would be completed by 2016. Read the rest of this entry »

The Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT) has announced it will hold general elections next year.
Nizar Jivan, the president of the association, told The Citizen on Wednesday that elections to pick new officials will take place in January or February 2011.
“Elections for the new leadership will take place next year. All eligible AAT members would be invited to elect people they want to take charge” he said.
Mr.Jivan, who has been the president of the association since 1985, said he was aware some members and other people wanted him to step down from AAT leadership. Read the rest of this entry »

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts has asked the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority to review its laws so as to relocate the Maasai community living in the middle of the park.
The committee under its chairperson Zitto Kabwe made the call during their tour to assess different projects that are implemented by NCAA upon which they found a large number of people and cattle inside the reserve.
“It’s now a high time that NCAA management sat down and made recommendations on how the Parliament could change the law because the number of people and cattle have tremendously increased something that needs a very cautious decision regarding the situation to be made,”said Mr Kabwe. The East African Court of Justice (EACJ), one of the organs of the Eastg African Community, is developing a strategic plan that will guide and direct its activities in the next five years.
The five year strategic analysis will help identify the Court’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, thereby providing an insight into its future.
A three-day workshop whose participants are charged with developing the strategy is currently ongoing at the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge outside Arusha.
“It is hoped that the strategy will build upon strengths and take advantage of opportunities while overcoming and minimising the effects of weaknesses and threats” said a statement issued by the EAC yesterday. Read the rest of this entry »

Some policemen consider Arusha to be a very dangerous workplace owing to the likelihood of facing armed criminals from time to time.
Speaking at a party to welcome the New Year, some members of the force said matters were compounded by poor working conditions.
They called on the government to provide enough working equipment such as vehicles and avail them with good accommodation to enable them cope.
Their concerns were echoed by regional police commander Matei Basilio, who said armed criminals were spreading terror in various parts of the region despite intensified patrols. Read the rest of this entry »

The Unites States Navy made a dramatic intervention to rescue a Tanzanian ship and seized eight of the marauding Somali pirates, who attempted to hijack the vessel on Sunday, it was revealed in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The American military, which is part of an international force fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean, rescued the Tanzanian vessel following a brazen confrontation with the pirates.
Piracy off the coast of Somalia has become a nightmare for the shipping industry for several years now, with scores of vessels, including oil tankers overpowered and commandeered into hiding until hefty ransoms are paid. Read the rest of this entry »
