Tamwa boss wins US award

The Tanzania Media Women Association (Tamwa) executive director, Ms Ananilea Nkya, yesterday received the US Tanzania Women of Courage Award.

 Ms Nkya was honoured by the US ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Alfonso Lenhardt, at a colourful event held at the embassy. Speaking after accepting the award, Ms Nkya urged the government to amend the outdated laws that propagate gender violence against women and girls.

She cited the 1971 Marriage Act which allows the girl child to be married at the age of 14. ?This war against gender based violence would not be won if there are still some loopholes in our laws which allow the perpetrators to escape unpunished,? Ms Nkya said. Read the rest of this entry »

DC orders TPDF to stop demolishing houses

The government has asked the Tanzania People?s Defence Forces (TPDF) to stop demolishing houses belonging to wananchi at Msati area in Tarime.

Tarime district commissioner Frank Uhahula told a full council meeting here yesterday that the decision was aimed at averting unnecessary conflicts in the district already marred by ethnic clashes.

He said the decision would pave the way for the district council?s land officers to survey the area afresh to identify correct boundaries separating the military land from civilian settlement area. The conflict erupted between the army and residents at the area after each side claimed to be lawful owner of the land. Read the rest of this entry »

Projects under EPZA rake in 339bn/- from exports

PROJECTS operating under the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) have earned the country more than 250 million US dollars (about 339bn/-) in exports over the last three years, it was announced in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

EPZA Director General Dr Adelhelm Meru, said this when briefing a high-powered Kenyan delegation currently in the country to learn about the operations of the authority in Tanzania.

Dr Meru said since it began operations in 2007, EPZA had made some good progress and the trend was likely to improve as more investments in various sectors continue to flow in. “We are very optimistic about speedy growth of EPZA operations,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »
