PREGNANCY is the leading cause of dropouts for school girls in Tanzania. And a national law forbidding young mothers to return to school after giving birth did not make it any easier for them to continue their education.
But thanks to pressure from the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), the Tanzania government has now adopted a new law that allows young mothers to continue their education at their former schools.
Before the revision of the law, some girls studied at vocational centres which made it easier to return to school.
Centres exist throughout the country and depend on the ministry of education. The training is funded thanks to family support: the girls learn a trade (such as hairdressing or dressmaking) or take refresher courses in the evening. Read the rest of this entry »

Stakeholders have condemned sources of information, who buy all newspapers carrying their scandalous stories and burn them.
The media practitioners said during a workshop organised by the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC) for them and other media stakeholders from Lake Zone regions that the move denied members of the public of information.
The chairman of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) in Musoma Rural district, Mr charles Kayela, said the infamous habit amongst some people was tantamount to corruption. Read the rest of this entry »
