The 17-month double-digits inflation spell has come to an end following the easing of the cost of living to below 10 per cent in February, which signifies continued slumping of food prices in recent months.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced the good news on Monday that the consumer price index (CPI) rose 9.6 per cent on an annual basis in February, slower than the 10.9 per cent growth that was recorded in the previous month.
The trend followed drop in food inflation to 10.1 per cent annually in February, slowing from the 11.3 per cent growth in January. At the same time, the non-food inflation eased to 8.9 per cent from 10 per cent in January. Read the rest of this entry »

A new form of corruption, which involves failure by public servants to deliver services or inputs paid for by the government, is hurtingAfrica, a new World Bank report says.
According to the Africa Development Indicators (ADI) 2010 report, problem of public servants failing to deliver goods or services paid for by governments is pervasive and widespread across Africa, including Tanzania. And it’s having an adverse effect, especially on the poor, with long-term consequences for development.
In devising the annual report, the World Bank shifted from its traditional focus on corruption based on the payment of bribes to powerful political personalities or kickbacks to public officials and instead focused on the way this “quiet corruption” distorts the public service delivery system. A foreign coach, who will take charge of the national netball team, “Taifa Queens” will be known soon as the Government current reviews all the applications made for the technical job.
The Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (Chaneta) recently posted applications for the post in the World’s governing netball body, IFNA website seeking for a qualified job in a response to an offer made by President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
President Kikwete, who is an ardent sports fan and a former patron with the Basketball Association of Tanzania (BATA) now transformed into Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) promised to hire a coach as it was the case for other sporting events like football, which saw the recruitment of Brazilian Marcio Maximo. Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) has said that it will participate fully in a countrywide workers’ strike called by the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (Tucta) in May.
This comes in the wake of a notice by the Tucta recently that it had dedicated the International Labour Day on May 1 to mobilising all workers in the country to stage a countrywide strike for an endless period to pressurize the government to respond to workers’ demands.
The threat to lay down tools follows government failure to respond to the workers demands on the salary increments, a review of social security schemes and reduction on money deducted on workers’ salaries Pay As You Earn (PAYE). Read the rest of this entry »
