A study of bottlenose dolphins living off the coast of Zanzibar has found that the many tourist boats operating in the area are harassing the animals, preventing them from resting, feeding and nurturing their young.
The research, led by Dr Per Berggren of Newcastle University, also highlighted swimming with dolphins - in particular where tourists swim in very close and try to touch the dolphins - as being incredibly stressful for the animals.
This is the reason why tourists wanting to watch and swim with dolphins are now being urged to keep their distance in a bid to protect both the animals and the local communities whose livelihoods depend on them. Read the rest of this entry »

THE shortage of science teachers in the country is addressed as a thorny issue and one of the major factors behind poor performance in science subjects.
Some secondary schools especially government owned have reportedly been served by a single science teacher and as a result some students are never taught at all.
President Jakaya Kikwete throws the challenge to universities and colleges in the country to produce such teachers in abundance, saying that the government guarantees their jobs after graduating from their studies. Read the rest of this entry »

THE Government will not issue payments to political parties’ agents during the forthcoming October general elections due to budget constraints.
The Minister of the State, Policy, Coordination and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Phillip Marmo, told the ‘Daily News’ that the state was already bound to incur expenses for two polling government agents, and four security personnel in each of the 55,000 polling stations countrywide.
“We have a deficit budget, it is too costly to foot expenses for at least 20 political party agents at every polling station countrywide in the October elections,” the minister noted. Read the rest of this entry »
