Zanzibar chief minister urges for protection of water sources

The Zanzibar Chief Minister, Mr Shamsi Vuai nahodha, has asked local governments to met stiff penalties to people who found destroying water sources and sabotaging infrastructure.

He made the appeal here yesterday when addressing a public rally held at Mwendapole grounds in Kibaha during the climax of Water Week celebrations.

Mr Nahodha said people should stop the habit of using clean water for unimportant activities like washing cars and making bricks.He said car washing in urban centres has turned out to be one of activities that pollute water sources.

Society asked to fight child abuse

Members of the society have been urged to join forces with government authorities to tackle child abuse problems.

The Registrar of Commercial division of the High Court, Ms Katrina Revocati made the call in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the launching of a film called Abused Innocence. The film highlights the cruelty and hardships that most of the children encounter in their daily lives.

 Ms Revocati said that although the government has been playing a great part in tackling the problem by enacting laws and rules, but in some parts of the country child abuse incidences are not reported to the authorities.  Read the rest of this entry »

The sh20bn in ivory vote

Tanzania yesterday lost its bid to sale part of its ivory stockpile by single vote.The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) meeting in Doha, Qatar, rejected the request over

Tanzania’s alleged failure to check rising incidents of poaching. 

According to reports from the meeting, Tanzania tried to split its proposal in two – downlisting and trade on ivory. On the downlisting proposal, 57 members voted for, while 45 voted against the proposal, with 32 abstaining.
On the sales category, 59 voted for while 60 members rejected the proposals and 13 delegates abstained.

Apparently after observing Tanzania fail in its application, Zambia decided to withdrew its proposals to sale part of its stockpile and asked for only downlisting on which 55 voted “yes”, 36 members said “no” and 40 abstained. Read the rest of this entry »

Armed gang grabs explosives at mine

Police in Geita District have arrested a suspect linked to a robbery at Geita Gold Mine (GGM) during which several boxes of explosives were stolen.

The acting Mwanza regional police boss, Mr Nonosious Komba, said an armed gang stormed into the mine at around 2am yesterday.

The robbers tied up a security guard, identified as Nyandu Shunde, and relieved him of his firearm before stealing 14 boxes of explosives whose value could not be immediately established.
