Four opposition leaders cross over to ruling CCM

Four opposition leaders have abandoned their parties in favour of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
They are the Civic United Front (CUF) member of the executive committee in Morogoro municipality, Mr Steven Chacha, Mr Hadithi Idd, also from CUF, Mr Athumani from NCCR-Mageuzi and Mr Haji Seif from the Tanzania Labour Party (TLP).

Speaking to reporters after announcing their move, they said their decision was not influenced by anything apart from the poor performance of opposition parties.

Mr Chacha, who had unsuccessfully vied to be a councilor representing Mzinga ward, said while members of opposition parties were not speaking  the same language, it was different in CCM.

Bukoba Airport reopens for smaller aircrafts

 THE Bukoba Airport which was closed on February 5, this year, to allow rehabilitation work has been reopened temporarily for smaller aircrafts to land, pending the construction of a modern terminal building. 

The Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA) Bukoba Regional Manager, Mr Komba Kamchakyo, told the ‘Daily News’ today that final works were expected to be completed before end of May, this year.

Dar es Salaam man killed by hit and run driver

ONE pedestrian died on the spot after being knocked down by a hit and run vehicle at Kiluvya Bwawani, along Morogoro Road in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam.

The Kinondoni Regional Police Commander, Mr Elias Kalinga, said today that the deceased has been identified as William Muhanga (38), a resident of Kiluvya Bwawani area.

“The vehicle and the driver could be not identified and investigation is in progress,” he said. The deceased body has been preserved at Tumbi Hospital mortuary in Kibaha District, Coast Region. Read the rest of this entry »

Zantel sets special budget for community projects

THE mobile communications provider, Zantel, has established a special budget under its Corporate Social responsibility programme where regional and district leaders can apply for funds to cater for community projects like water, education and health services.

In the same vein, Zantel has said that mobile broadband will generate only a modest 5 per cent of total mobile revenue collection in Tanzania by 2014. 

Zantel Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Norman Moyo said that with penetration as low as 2 per cent, Tanzania is still one of the countries in sub-Saharan and East Africa with highest potential growth of internet penetration.
