Limbless and lifeless bodies, pieces of strewed human flesh, twisted metal, torn pieces of mini-bus body, grief, silence. This was the scene at Kibamba Darajani, Kinondoni district in Dar es Salaam this morning where ten people including a pregnant woman died in a grisly road accident.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace with registration numbers T 615 AJW traveling to Ubungo from Kibamba and another truck with registration number T 192 ABP Fiat Iveco and its semi-trailer with registration number T 189 ABP.
The ‘Daily News’ witnessed the rescue exercise where ten bodies were salvaged from the Toyota Hiace which had been crushed flat by the semi-trailer. The cause of the accident was alleged to be failure of breaks of the semi trailer whose driver lost control and swerved to the other side of the road where it overran the commuter mini-bus. Taifa Stars’ preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers yesterday received a major boost after the National Micro-finance Bank (NMB) granted the team with Sh36 million. The amount is part of the Sh400 million sponsorship deal between the bank and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF).
Imani Kajura, NMB head of marketing and communication, said the amount includes sportswear worth Sh15 million. According to him, Sh 21 million will be used for preparations ahead of tomorrow’s match against Somalia. “We are committed to uplifting the standard of soccer in the country, thus we’ll keep on supporting our team and other junior teams,” he said. Local athletes are likely to miss out the Commonwealth Games following Tanzania Athletics (AT) failure to confirm their participation.
The deadline for submitting names of the athletes to the Tanzania Olympics Committee (TOC) was on March 1, but the athletics body has yet to confirm. Briefing reporters, the TOC secretary general, Filbert Bayi said their efforts to remind AT officials were in vain.
“We have been reminding them to submit the names since January, but they decided to ignore us and now it’s too late,” the legendary runner said. According to him, hopes of the athletes to compete in the New Delhi Games were hanging by a thread. Read the rest of this entry »

THE government of
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed here today by the Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives, Mr Stephen Wasira and the Japanese Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Hiroshi Nakagawa.
A statement from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two road projects have been co-financed by the government of Japan and Africa Development Bank (ADB).
