Tanzanian PM’s visit opens up chances for bilateral ties

Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania Mizengo Peter Pinda began a three-day official visit to Vietnam on March 29 as a guest of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

The visit, the first to Vietnam by Pinda since he took up his position as Prime Minister of Tanzania in 2008, takes place at a time when the two nations are celebrating 45 years of diplomatic ties.

It aims to promote economic, trade and investment relations, especially in agriculture and farm produce processing, between Vietnam and Tanzania.

Museveni orders halt to ‘boda boda’ arres

Crackdown on boda boda cyclists who do not have helmets should be halted, President Museveni has directed.

While addressing residents who had turned up to have a glimpse of South African president Jacob Zuma, who was launching the Pan African Wall of Fame in Kampala, Mr Museveni said sharing helmets could lead to the spread of diseases. “I don’t believe in those helmets.

A motorcyclist can have his helmet but forcing passengers to put on helmets is not something that I support,” he said. Mr Museveni said he had ordered the Inspector General of police, Maj Gen Kale Kayihura, to halt the Police crackdown on boda bodas in the city.

Organised poaching, illegal trade — why Tanzania lost out at Cites meet

A new investigation by a panel of international and local experts that implicated senior government officials in the illegal ivory trade and the rise in elephant poaching in Tanzania is believed to have led to the country being denied permission for a one-off sale of its $20 million ivory stockpile.

The report, seen by The East African last week, says the illegal international trade in ivory is conducted by organised criminal syndicates with the collusion of corrupt Tanzanian officials.

It reveals that, since January last year, Tanzania has been implicated as the source of nearly 50 per cent of the ivory seized worldwide — about 11.632 tonnes — while poaching of elephants in Tanzania is increasingly unsustainable. Read the rest of this entry »

Tenant resists eviction in city demolition row

 Violence broke out in Dar es Salaam yesterday after people living in flats owned by Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania tried to stop a group of youths sent to demolish the apartments.

 The demolishers who were armed with iron bars and machetes, did not show any documentary evidence to prove that they have a legal mandate to demolish the apartments located at Chang’ombe suburb in Temeke District. Amid the foray which attracted several, muggers had a field day by stealing household property from the houses.

A spokesperson of the victims, Mr Hassan Dimbo, said they were not been informed about the demolition. That is why they we blocked the gang, he added.
