Movenpick Hotels & Resorts re-enforces support for families in Africa

Movenpick Hotels & Resorts and Habitat for Humanity Africa & the Middle East are delighted to announce the continued partnership to help providing affordable housing for families and communities inTanzania. They are also celebrating the collection of USD 14,000 from the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel in Dar es Salaam towards the programme.

This meaningful partnership between both organizations was established in Tanzania in February 2008. Since then, it has helped 20 families in Tanzania to improve their standard of living and enhance facilities in their communities.

Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International Today, has built over 350,000 houses around the world and has provided more than 1.75 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent and affordable shelter. Read the rest of this entry »

How Kakobe lost battle to Tanesco

Clad in yellow T-shirts inscribed with messages rebuking Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco), the Full Gospel Bible Fellowship (FGBF) followers pitched camp outside their church early this year in show of defiance against the power utility company.

They weathered a scotching sun and night-time mosquitoes for 72 days as they guided against routing of high tension electric cables near their church at Mwenge.

FGBF Bishop Zacharia Kakobe mobilized his followers to guard the church premises around the clock to make sure that Tanesco technicians did not get an opportunity to erect the pylons. Read the rest of this entry »

Tanzania: Coast Region - TCCIA Re-Elect Outgoing Leadership

Kibaha — The Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) in Coast Region has re-elected the outgoing leadership for another three-year tenure in office.The elections were preceded by the annual general meeting at Kibaha town.

 The association’s regional chairperson, Ms Kasa Mlonja retained her post with 39 votes against her opponent, Ms Clara Ibihya’s 33 votes. One of the 73 votes cast was spoilt.Announcing the results, TCCIA President, Mr Aloyce Mwamanga, said that Mr Ramadhani Mkabara retained his post of TCCIA’s Vice- Chairman of Industry and was unopposed with 66 votes. TRADE NEGOTIATIONS:Now business community supports Mkapa on EPA

The private sector and civil society have supported retired President Benjamin Mkapa’s advice that the East African Community should be careful in its Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations with the European Union.They described Mr Mkapa’s concern as “genuine”, adding that it reflected the position they had been holding for the past five years, saying governments of the EAC member countries should take the former President’s advice seriously

Mr Mkapa’s remarks have come as a consolation to us… this is what we have been advocating for the past five years,” a member of the Tanzania Civil Society Trade Coalition (TCSTC), Mr Abubakar Mohammed Ali, told The Citizen.

The statement Mr Mkapa made in Nairobi recently has also drawn the support of members of the private sector, who said there were many issues that should be considered before the region entered into an agreement with the developed nations. Read the rest of this entry »
