TMA predicts the rains to continue to June

PEOPLE living in lowlands have been advised to move to high ground because flash floods caused by the heavy seasonal rains might persist.

Speaking to ‘Daily News’ today, Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) Ag Director General, Dr Agnes Kijazi, warned that the rains were likely to continue to June, and due to poor drainage system, the flash floods might cause flooding in low lying areas.

The Msimbazi River at Jangwani area is threatening to burst its banks following the rains that have pounded the city continuously for the past three days. Residents at Bonde la Mpunga in Msasani and some areas at Jangwani, have been virtually rendered prisoners in their homes as their houses have been surrounded by murky water. Only one round was completed on Tuesday when heavy rains grounded the tournament to halt. The organisers, Dar es Salaam Gymkhana tennis section and members of International Tennis Federation (ITF)  decided to shelve the event to the following day(Wednesday).. University lecturers now call off strike

Dar es Salaam (Udasa) academic staffs took a dramatic turn yesterday when they decided to abruptly end their indefinite strike to demand pay raise.
The decision was arrived in a vote held during their meeting after the chairman of University of

Dar es Salaam Academic Staffs Assembly (Udasa), Dr Dalmas Nyaoro, threatened to stand down, accusing some Udasa members of betrayal.

Dr Nyaoro said after their meeting on Tuesday that blessed the strike, an overwhelming number of members voted in support of the strike, but some of them in some of departments continued teaching.    Read the rest of this entry »

How Maulid event turned into tragedy

A religious celebration ended tragically for Tanga residents, as 18 students were killed when a lorry carrying nearly 130 people overturned on Tuesday night.The group was returning from Maulid celebrations when the driver of the grossly overloaded truck reportedly lost control after failing to negotiate a corner at the Mabanda ya Papa roundabout.

More than 100 of the lorry passengers, who were injured in the crash, were taken to the nearby Bombo Hospital, victims of the worst disaster in the town in recent times.  The lorry, The Citizen, was informed, was travelling back to the town from a Maulid fete in Kibafuta village in Tanga Rural, when it overturned.

All the dead were students at the Tanga Town-based Islamic institute, Shamsi el-Maarifa. They had gone to the nearby village for the religious ceremony in praise of Prophet Muhamad.

Kikwete popularity soars, voters reject 2/3 of MPs

TWO-thirds of the sitting MPs would lose their seats if the general elections were held last month, an opinion poll has revealed.

The polls have also shown a marked upswing in the performance rating of President Jakaya Kikwete with 49.3 per cent said were very much contented, 36.5 said were somehow while 13.1 per cent said they were discontented.

It was also found out that 51.4 per cent of those who said they were much contented were women as men accounted for 48.6 per cent while men constituted 57 per cent of those who said they were discontented, with women accounting for 43 per cent.

AFDB:Dar to record fastest recovery in EA

Tanzania’s economy will experience the most rapid economy in the East African region this year as its agricultural strategy and minerals attract more investors.
The country’s economy would be the fastest growing in the region this year at 5.7 per cent according to projections by the African Development Bank.

Uganda economy would grow by 5.1 per cent followed by Rwanda, whose economy is estimated by the bank to grow by 4.8 per cent. And Kenya, the regional largest economy, is expected to grow by 4.3 per cent while Burundi’s economy will accelerate by 3.2 per cent. Read the rest of this entry »

The human-elephant conflict

The damage caused by elephants has been the source of loss running into millions of shillings incurred by Tanzania farmers each year, especially during harvesting seasons.

Worse still, on average 20 people are killed each year by elephants, according to statistics. They indicated that in 2008 alone elephants caused Sh718 million worth of damage in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region.

 Other areas of the country affected include communities west of Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, east of the Selous Game Reserve, while others are near Mikumi, Ruaha and Tarangire national parks. Read the rest of this entry »

Tracking of tax relief is automated

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has introduced an automated system for tracking tax exemptions. It will capture all items in the approved exemption lists and link them with the Asycuda ++, an online customs system used by freight forwarders and port clients to send documents for cargo processing.
