CCM’s victory in Zanzibar is certain – Shein, Bilal

CCM Zanzibar presidential candidate Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, on Thursday pledged to maintain policies aimed at transforming Zanzibar into a prosperous place if elected president in the October 31, general elections.

“I am ready to serve you. Let us work together in changing Zanzibar. I know Zanzibar problems well and I am also aware of its social challenges,” Dr Shein said at a public rally at Kibanda Maiti grounds here.

Zanzibar President, Dr Amani Karume, had earlier introduced to the rally, Dr Shein as CCM’s presidential aspirant for the Isles and former Zanzibar Chief Minister, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal as President Jakaya Kikwete’s running mate in his re-election bid. Read the rest of this entry »

Top lawyer killed

Two gunmen on Tuesday night shot dead a top law professor and two other people during a raid at his home on Dar es Salaam’s outskirts in the latest incident in a wave of mounting crime in the city’s suburbs. 

The death of Prof Jwani Timothy Mwaikusa, one of the country’s leading public law experts, plunged his family, neighbours, friends, colleagues and the entire legal fraternity into deep mourning yesterday.  

The killers, who ambushed the University of Dar es Salaam’s School of Law lecturer as soon as he drove into the compound of his modest residence at SalaSala, on the northern outskirts of the city, felled him with two bullets – one into the head and the other into the chest. Topflight Getting set teams in Dar–Tenga

Several topflight teams are keen to play friendly matches against Taifa Stars, according to the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president, Leodeger Tenga.

Briefing reporters yesterday, the TFF boss said the visits of the likes of Brazil, Cote d’Ivoire and New Zealand boosted their chances of getting the nod from high profile teams.

“We have requested a number of teams to play against us and so far we have received positive responses unlike in the past. ‘This is mainly due to the visits of the teams that competed in the 2010 World Cup finals, so fans should expect some exciting matches at the National Stadium this year,” he said.

Precision Air to extend wings abroad

Precision Air, a vibrant local private airline, envisages adding some international routes for it to realise its dream of becoming one of the biggest aviation companies in sub-Saharan Africa.  The airline will begin extending its wings  to most of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern Africa Development Commission (SADC) member countries,  the airline’s chairman, Mr Michael Shirima, said.
