Moving tale of HIV positive pastor

A pastor’s heart-rending personal setback, pain and suffering as the world appeared to crumble around him after he tested positive for HIV has turned out to be a blessing for himself, his church, other religious congregations and the country. 

This is the story of Pastor Amin Sendewa, who some 10 years ago, felt dejected, abandoned and hopeless after being rejected by the Lutheran Church of Tanzania. Today, he’s no longer bitter about his ordeal, as his personal experience has contributed to the general change of attitude by churches towards clerics infected with the deadly virus. 

Before his sacking by the church 2000, the Rev Sendewa had his life set, what with a loving family, a job as a university chaplain, and respect in the community. But all that dramatically changed when HIV struck and shattered his dreams and ravaged his family.  Read the rest of this entry »

Kikwete touts clean elections

THE National CCM Chairman, President Jakaya Kikwete, has reiterated the need for election of leaders are visionary, competent and clean in the forthcoming general elections.

Addressing CCM members, supporters and well-wishers at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, the president also underscored the role of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in delivery of clean, free and fair elections at every stage.

“Voters must be given the opportunity to freely and fairly elect leaders of their own choice,” the president insisted in his address to thousand of people who turned out at the grounds to congratulate him for his nomination as CCM presidential candidate in October 31 polls. President Kikwete: Better life won’t drop like manna

President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday defended his government’s implementation of his 2005 election pledge to ensure a “better life for every Tanzanian”, saying it had the best way it could amid Herculean challenges.

The President said that nothing other than hard work could improve the people’s standard of living.

He was apparently responding to his critics, who, have alleged that more Tanzanians have slipped into abject poverty since he was elected to his first five-year term, which ends with this year’s General Election.

He was addressing the National Assembly in Dodoma, before proroguing the Ninth Parliament. Tanzanians will go to the polls on October 31, to elect the Union President, the Zanzibar President, MPs and councillors. Read the rest of this entry »
