Tendwa probing CCM over ‘early’ compaigns

The Registrar of Political Parties office is investigating allegations that some political parties, including the ruling CCM, are engaging in premature campaigns, which is illegal. Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Political Parties Registrar John Tendwa said his office has received numerous complaints from different parties that are accusing one another of starting campaigns ahead of schedule. 

According to a timetable issued by the National Electoral Commission (NEC), official campaigns for the October 31 General Election kick off on August 20, to end on October 30. Read the rest of this entry »

Orphans scale Mt Kilimanjaro for funds

Two orphaned children, who are from the same family, are part of a team that will scale Mount Kilimanjaro this year under the annual initiative supported by the Geita Gold Mine (GGM). Two Anglo Gold Ashant (AGA) chief executives would also join Elizabeth Anthony, 13, and her sibling, George Anthony, 12, in seven dayus expedition which is scheduled to kick off today.

AGA owns GGM and the two executives who would take part in this years Kilimanjaro Challenge have been named as Graham Ehm and Charles Carter. The chief secretary, Mr Philemon Luhanjo is expected to flag off the event. Statement issued yesterday by GGM communications manager, Mr, Godvictor Lyimo, said that the two orphaned children from Moyo wa Huruma orphanage in Geita have received a $24,000 (about Sh33.6 million) sponsorship.

The sponsorship has been extended by the Us ambassador in the country, Mr Alfonso Lenhardt, Mt Lyimo said. According to the chairman of preparation committee, Mr Clement Msalangi, the expedition targets to raise more than Sh500 million. Read the rest of this entry »
