Church chides divisive media

THE Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) has warned the media against involving the church in politics because the move may plunge the country into chaos.

TEC President, Bishop JudeThaddeus Ruwaichi, told a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday that involving the church in the ongoing political propaganda by various parties towards the general elections was quite unacceptable.

“TEC finds this move a deliberate effort by a section of the media to tarnish the good image of the church that has for years been advocating for free and fair election,” he said.

TLP leader campaigns at burial ceremony

AS campaigns for councillorship and Members of Parliament gain momentum, a top leader of the opposition Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) caused apprehension at a burial site when he asked mourners to vote for Mrema and Mbatia in the coming general election.

This happened on Saturday at Iwa in Kirua Vunjo, Moshi Rural District in Kilimanjaro Region at the burial ceremony of Philomena Mbatia, the mother of the Chairman of NCCR-Mageuzi, Mr James Mbatia, who died on July 16.

The TLP leader who is the party’s Secretary General, Major (rtd) Jesse Makundi, asked the mourners to vote for Augustine Lyatonga Mrema, the party’s national chairman who is vying for the Vunjo Constituency and Mr James Mbatia who will contest in the Kawe Constituency in Kinondoni,

Phiri’s ‘bad behaviour’ irks Simba

SIMBA SC Chairman, Ismail Rage has written to the head coach, Zambian Patrick Phiri demanding explanation over his tendency to reporting late from his holidays.

Rage said on Sunday that they are fed up with the tendency which he claimed has been affecting the training programme. “I have written him a memo to explain why we should not terminate his contract with the club as he seems not serious to honour his obligations,” claimed Rage.

Speaking from Tabora, Rage said that the team has been forced to travel to

Hands off Somalia, Shabaab warns AU

The Somali militant group al Shabaab yesterday warned African leaders meeting in Kampala against continuing with their “hostile” policy towards war-ravaged Somalia.

 A militant leader allied to the group, Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim Bilal, said those who would ignore the warning would “cry like they did in Kampala”, in reference to the twin bomb attacks that killed over 70 people in the Ugandan capital earlier this month.  Al Shabaab swiftly claimed responsibility for the July 11 attacks that targeted people watching the World Cup final on television.

Al Shabaab’s warning coincided with the start of the AU Heads of State Summit, which is expected to discuss the long-running conflict in Somalia and its potential to spilling over the country’s borders. Read the rest of this entry »
