THE government has warned that any business that trades locally on the US dollar will be prosecuted because the Tanzanian shilling remains the legal tendering currency.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Mr Ramadhan Kijjah called on the public to help expose people insisting payment in foreign currencies for local transactions.
“The government will appreciate to get information that will help on the crackdown of those demanding dollars in local trading,” he told the ‘Daily News’ in an interview in Dar es Salaam. Read the rest of this entry »

In the last two months,Africa has experienced two major happenings that are both unique and intriguing at the same time. And as if prompted by a mysterious twist of fate they both happened together, one in relation to the other. The world cup was, indeed, an event that many Africans will remember for a long, long time. Africans love soccer.
And it is easy to notice the joy, not only on their faces but also, in their hearts when they are watching a soccer match. Although during this year’s world cup competitions African teams were eliminated early, many fans continued to adopt new teams in order to continue watching and rejoicing.
But what belies the alleged al-Shaabab bomb blasts in Uganda, which targeted civilians who were watching world cup finals some weeks ago, is a contradiction that has puzzled many. A contradiction in the sense that such a rare and tragic event could happen at a time when African soccer fans were at the peak of their happiness. Read the rest of this entry »

CCM leaders were at pains yesterday to explain he announcement by a district party official of the establishment of a non-existent parliamentary constituency in Shinyanga Region.
No one within the ruling party gave a straightforward answer when The Citizen sought to know why the official declared the establishment of Ushetu “constituency”, which has since been disowned by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
CCM secretary-general Yusuf Makamba threw the ball to party officials in Kahama District, saying they were the ones with the answer. Read the rest of this entry »

Very reference to how aspirants are planning to implement their party policies has found its way to media reportage. Since the beginning of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) primaries, what we have been reading more is corruption and gimmicks by the aspirants.
The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has a heavy task before it as it seems all contestants have decided that it is corruption which is going to land them the posts. We started to see the tricks when aspirants started to collect nomination forms on July 19. There are those who were accompanied by long entourage of cars with friends and supported singing their praises.
In Kilimanjaro region for instance, one contestant was accompanied by a 20-car entourage with posters flashing supporters singing and dancing. Cars with loud speakers introduced him as an MP in waiting. Read the rest of this entry »
