Cooperation for Fair Trade in Africa (Cofta) is expected to launch the Tanzania Network for Fair Trade (Tanfat) that intends to bring new approach towards empowering of the small scale producers in the country.
The Tanfat chairman, Mr Deodatus Kafwa said on Tuesday that the official launch would take place tomorrow in Dar es salaam, adding that the move aimed at promoting fair trade in African countries.
He said fair trade would be promoted only if African countries sign up the standards and ensure that they are being adhered in business practices. Read the rest of this entry »

Vodacom Tanzania has unveiled the lowest prepaid recharge card of Sh300 called ‘Jiti Tatu’. Communications manager Nector Foya told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Vodacom subscribers would be able to recharge their mobile phones with the new top-up cards.
“We will continue to offer better services to our customers to enable them to communicate easily,” she said. She mentioned areas where the Sh300 vouchers would be distributed by Vodacom officials as Tandika Sokoni, Kariakoo, Mbagala and bus stops in Dar es Salaam.

DESPITE many challenges facing loans repayment and recovery exercise, the Higher Education Students Loans Board (HESLB) has managed to identify more than 56,000 loan beneficiaries. Out of these, the HESLB has managed to track down 24, 000 graduates. More than 10, 000 graduates out of those traced are repaying the loans already.
The Loan Repayment and Recovery Director, Mr Juma Chagonja said so far the HESLB has managed to recover more than 3.7bn/- from graduates, instead of the 15.5bn/- which would have been the amount recovered to date if the graduates were paying as stipulated. Mr Chagonja noted that in total the amount to be recovered since the loans were disbursed in 1994 to 2008/09 financial year stands at 80.96bn/-. Read the rest of this entry »

A minister was among ten aspirants seeking nomination for the special parliamentary seat on the ruling Chama Chama Mapinduzi (CCM) women’s wing (UWT) ticket who were questioned yesterday over corruption allegations.
Mrs Margaret Sitta, the minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, and nine other aspirants were arrested by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB). This happened after they reportedly bribed members of the UWT general meeting in Tabora Region.
The Tabora regional PCCB deputy commander, Mr Bruno Rwenyagira, confirmed that Mrs Sitta and nine other UWT members were arrested on Monday night. Read the rest of this entry »
