At the time the Meru case reached the General Assembly, Julius Nyerere returned from Edinburgh . Archbishop Edgar Marantha, going to meet him at airport, offered a seat in his car to Maria Gabriel, Nyerere's fiancée. She was studying at the Dar-es-salaam St Joseph's convent to perfect her English and general education.
Not having seen Julius for three years, she was worried lest he had changed and she turned down the Archbishop's offer saying: ‘My Lord, I am not sure he is the same man I'm in love with. Anyhow, it is not a girl's place to run after a man, not even in a bishop's car……..'
